4 octobre 2021

Mot d’ouverture - Katia Vinogradova

“ Chers amis!

Valentina Day in Reunion Island for Student Outreach

Valentina Terechkova was a pioneer, not only in space conquest but also in the fight for equality between women and men, as the first woman in orbit on the 16th of June 1963. With courage and self-confidence she went beyond the limits that placed women on Earth, more specifically in the kitchen. That is the reason why the Roland Garros Senior High School in Reunion Island found important to celebrate Valentina Day on the 16th of June 2021. Created by Willy Lameyer in 2016,

the event inspires many teenagers and grown-ups. For this 2021 edition, after a short presentation of Valentina and her feat, an interesting debate began about the role of women in space and in society in general, in the highschool theater. The education issue came up and students discussed the fact that stereotypes are a burden confining teenage girls in their choice of studies. Valentina was not only a young woman but she also came from a popular background and that was precisely

why she was chosen… Those characteristics could be obstructive now. But some young girls from Roland Garros Senior High School have succeeded in big challenges, like Abby, who was the best in the BIA (French Aeronautics and Space Initiation Certificate), or Lea, who was awarded a national "Flame of Equality" Prize, and Valentina Day was a good opportunity to congratulate them. Through videoconferences, all the students had then the chance to talk with two famous

women from Reunion, Erika Velio and Varinka Ponamale, two expert space engineers, considering that Varinka is a candidate for the current ESA astronaut selection, who encouraged all of them to fulfil their dreams with creativity, steadfastness and to put their heart and soul into it. Afterwards, two videos contributed in the same direction with documents from the French National Audiovisual Archives about how people reacted in France after Valentina’s space journey and a testimony by Naoko Yamazaki, a famous Japanese astronaut, delivering an inspiring message to Reunionese students. The last part of this extraordinary Valentina day was devoted to a wonderful surprise : the arrival of young pupils from an elementary school with their teacher. Those kids had communicated with the French astronaut, Thomas Pesquet, the month before and they were delighted to meet highschool students and share with them their space knowledge and passion. The science teacher from Roland Garros had come with the cute idea of purchasing a goldfish for the children, they named it Valentina to remember this festive day. Organized by Reunion Island Space Initiative, in the Lycée Roland Garros, young students and their teachers had prepared this anniversary for weeks. On one side, some of them worked on the outreach project from a STEAM fields point of view with their teacher Willy Lameyer, on the other side, a few members of the

gender equality brigade worked on gender issues with their equality referent, Céline Hoarau. All of them made interesting research at home or in class and want to be part of next international event, the World Space Week in October 2021 around the theme “Women in Space” and, of course, of the famous ISTS. For further outreach, Valentina Day in Roland Garros was reported in the highschool news bulletin, on the school's website, and in the social media in Reunion Island. Roland Garros Senior High School’s Valentina Day was fully enjoyed by its participants but also by many people interested in both gender equality and space history. Most of all, this meeting between young pupils and older ones give us hope for the future as they are our future, boys and girls sharing the same  passion and values, and this little Valentina goldfish is a symbolic handover between them.

Key Words:  Women Astronauts, STEAM, Inspiration and Outreach, Valentina Day, Reunion Island

1.  Introduction

A job fair in aeronautical activities took place in Reunion Island on April 26-27, 2016. This forum was organized by our local Aeronautical Authority for our students and high schools in Reunion Island. At the same time, the Académie de la Réunion communicated on stereotypes and their consequences, and on girls' involvement in STEM and, through a partnership initiative, the MEDEF to raise awareness and encourage young girls to get involved. in scientific fields among others.

1.  The theme of the action: place of women in space, girl-boy equality

On this occasion, the Reunion Island space Initiative offered a stand with a workshop on space professions sponsored by Jean Jacques Favier with Angélique Verrechia from ISU, a young engineer member of the Women in Aerospace association, who came to promote the development of space activities in Réunion.

Naoko Yamazaki, Japanese astronaut, was sensitive to this initiative and agreed to contribute to the process by recording a video capsule intended to stimulate the appetite of young people, especially girls, with an inspiring message to young people from Réunion.

Following this forum, Willy Lameyer, teacher in physical sciences, and member of the Reunion Island Space Initiative, for the sake of consistency, wished to organize a tribute to Valentina Terechkova.

Because if Yuri's Night was an event that was increasingly successful year after year, the place of the first female astronaut, and more broadly the place of women in space, was obviously lacking in visibility.

Also the first edition of Valentina Day in Reunion was proposed on June 16, 2016 following this forum.

This edition was an opportunity to discover and highlight a current space personality, Candace Johnson, with a screening of a TED talk. It was clear that the emerging New Space was also an opportunity for an inclusive revolution. “Space for all”. Among the new players in astronautics, will the era of New Space be combined with women? This issue was particularly highlighted during the 2018 edition, with the sharing and retrospective of the meeting with Pyael Naze, who, far from any form of rabid feminism, tells the story, sometimes humorous, of some important scientists who by chance have the same peculiarity in common: their gender. Who discovered a record number of comets and asteroids? A woman. Who made it possible to understand how the population of the stars is organized? A woman. Who discovered the law allowing to survey the Universe, found beacons in space, understood the workings of stellar forges and upset our view of the Universe? Again and again a woman ... However, when we have to quote a random “historical” astronomer, we most often think of men: Ptolemy, Galileo, Copernicus or, closer to us for example, Hubble. Of course, over the centuries, women have had little access to science in general and astronomy in particular, but this is no reason to believe in the total lack of contribution on their part.

Are women at risk of being "shadow figures" of the opening New Space?

Everything suggests that a societal revolution is underway. And women take their place.

For example, as part of the Space & Aero Academic Days at the Montpellier Academy on May 20 and 21, Erika Vélio, an engineer from Réunion, participated in a round table on the feminization of professions and the promotion of scientific studies among Girls. Especially since, as indicated by the ESA recruitment campaign, a desire to open up access to space seems to infuse at the institutional level in the media context of a new race to the Moon of the great powers with a declared ambition of a crew that will welcome the first woman to set foot on the moon. Varinka Ponamalé engineer at AirBus shares Thomas Pesquet's dream and applied to be an astronaut candidate. These two young women are particularly involved in the activities of RiSi.

Among the many actions with the school public, the ARISS contact of a CM2 class at the Saint Leu school was for them on the occasion to support the growing enthusiasm and boost the pro-activity of Ms. Léandre on the occasion of the exchange with Thomas Pesquet!

Enough to inspire vocations from an early age.

This rich and intense context gave rise to and encouraged an original edition for Valentina Day 2021 by promoting the work of schoolchildren and inviting them to meet high school students. The initiative was therefore taken to organize a special day dedicated to the promotion of an aeronautical and space sector among young people on this very special day, indeed this year coincides with the 60th anniversary of Yuri's first manned flight. taking place in St Petersburg from June 14th to 18th, this June 16th was a great opportunity to bring together marking the beginning of humankind's spaceflight era.

2. Progress of the operation at the Lycée Roland Garros

On June 16, 2021, the Roland Garros high school celebrated the anniversary of the first woman's trip to space: on June 16, 1963, Valentina Terechkova took her place aboard Vostok 6, for a 3-day journey that propelled the Russians at the head of the space conquest. M. Lameyer, science teacher, is at the initiative of this project entitled "Valentina day" which allowed second 3 students and members of the equality brigade to celebrate this incredible anniversary with dignity in the amphitheater. of our establishment.

The program was rich in teaching and in surprise with a presentation of the history of women in space, followed by the presentation of awards to remarkable students, like Abby Gigan, major of the BIA this year. Ms. Lameyer presented her favorite book and a crest to Lea and Julie, other deserving young girls who were honored during this day when women were in the spotlight, like Valentina. Three members of the brigade took the opportunity to talk about the importance of gender equality in our society.

Mr. Lameyer then screened a video message from Japanese astronaut Naoko Yamazaki about his experience in space. Then two women from Reunion Island took the floor by videoconference, Erika Vélio and Varinka Ponamale, who encouraged the students to follow their passion. Varinka defines herself as "a Malbaraise from the East" who followed in the footsteps of her grandfather, a worker at the Bois-Rouge factory, by choosing to study aeronautical mechanical engineering in Toulouse. His remarkable career allows him today to apply as an astronaut, all the students wished him good luck.

But the nicest surprise of the morning was the arrival of Ms. Léandre’s CM2 students who were able to communicate with Thomas Pesquet last month. The children and high school students then discussed freely in the amphitheater and then talked about space thanks to the games and exhibition panels brought from their school in Saint Leu. A good moment of exchange where the youngest did not hesitate to speak up to train the older ones.

To close this exceptional celebration, the pupils of the second gave the children a fish named Valentina, then everyone danced in the amphitheater, before braving the rain and the cold buffers in search of the solar system in the courtyard, guided by M. Carret from the workshop of the two Infinites.

 3. Process of setting up the operation

  Design

The setup of the operation was inspired by the 4-step method of the Pignolet Diagram on project management.

May 13 to May 28:

The exploration of the feasibility was the most complex phase to manage because of many uncertainties and constraints for the availability of the requested contributors

After a call for ideas from colleagues and management, the course of a day at the Lycée seemed realistic following the positive feedback. On a practical level, we had an amphitheater that could host the event with an adjoining room that could be used for a possible exhibition of student work.

An agreement in principle from the school officials was confirmed and a bus could be made available.

May 28 to June 10:

Due to the end-of-year exam period, and protocol of sanitary conditions linked to the covid, the definition of the program for the conduct of Valentina Day, which should also include a link by videoconference with Guy Pignolet in Saint Petersburg in the afternoon, was therefore imposed as a framework of space and time, the morning of Wednesday June 16 and the only access to the building of the amphitheater, and to the room from 7:30 to 12:30 which forced to as much the proposals and ideas of outdoor workshops as water rockets or recreational on the theme of space, work on food and health in synergy with the canteen, the nurse, and the st2S with a meal of astronaut for lunch.

And it is with the proposals of his students that Willy Lameyer completed the design of this morning, integrating the idea of a musical show offered to these students invited to a high school.

8h00: Welcome and opening of Valentina Day by Mrs. Hoarau Céline

8:15 am: Award ceremony to Abby Gigan celebrated Godmother of Valentina Day

11:15 a.m .: Closing remarks and guided tour of the school by Bérénice

11:30 am: Boarding and departure from the Lycée

June 10 to June 14

During this period, for the distribution of tasks, while Céline Hoarau was working on a contribution for the historical and societal aspect, Ms. Léandre took care of the formalities for the arrival of her students and prepared them to lead workshops. Willy Lameyer visited the Saint Leu students in their school for a first contact and to discuss with them the format of the day. A selection of the assignments was made by the students themselves, who sorted out what they found most relevant to take with them for presentation to the students.

A coworker took care of the freebies, such as editing and printing the deck of cards, and a free baptismal voucher, the purchase of a fish and aquarium at a pet store.

A group of second graders worked on the musical performance, song selection, choreography and rehearsal.

The other group of students put together videos related to the morning, and did some research on the background to the day. Second year student Abby Gigan was able to share information about the Aeronautical Initiation Certificate with her class.

June 14 to June 15

As the amphitheater and adjoining room were used by the examination secretariat, the set-up took place in the late afternoon. The island configuration was chosen to be replaced in 10 minutes for the exhibition hall.

All the material has been stored in a room in the amphitheater for June 16.

4.  Effects and echoes of the operation - at school, in the media and on the networks, in the Réunion community

The Valentina Day initiative at the Lycée was greeted with enthusiasm and teachers such as Céline Hoarau immediately offered to join the operation by combining an intervention of the girls boys equality brigade. Valentina's energy, spirit of adventure and curiosity were naturally transmitted to all young people and adults, who then experienced an exciting synergy that was very beneficial both humanly and pedagogically.

The creativity and engagement of the students was remarkable; as proof, the drawing that Noah Blard made on his own initiative to represent his vision of Valentina and the woman in space. His comrades from the equality brigade, Mattéo and Céline, did not hesitate to speak in the amphitheater to talk about girl-boy equality, not only in space, but also in high school and in French society in general.

The teachers were not left out, the little spark of departure gave everyone the desire to meet and a certain interest in the conquest of space, thus creating bridges between the different disciplines (physical sciences, French) in a broader perspective of citizenship education and sustainable development. Indeed, the place of women in space is representative of the necessary evolution of our society towards progress but also towards more justice, equality, harmony and solidarity, which this Valentina day has very well. demonstrated and continues to demonstrate today, since students and teachers continue to invest in the project, despite the gloominess due to the global epidemic.

The information was transmitted online on the school's website as well as in the local press, as for example in this article:

Les élèves de l’AME de Saint-Leu participent à la "Valentina Day"

The pupils of the AME of Saint-Leu continue their journey around the theme of space by celebrating “Valentina Day” Today 58 years ago, Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to perform a flight in space . On June 16, 1963, this Russian cosmonaut took off from Baikonur aboard the Vostok 6 spacecraft. Armed with their experiences and their work on Thomas Pesquet's mission aboard the international space station, the AME students of Saint Leu were invited to share their knowledge with the students of the Roland Garros high school. This Wednesday, in fact, the 2021 Valentina Day edition, special ISS, was organized at Le Tampon, under the sign of the Alpha mission commanded by the French astronaut, dear to the hearts of Ms. Léandre's students.

Our ambassadors are thus continuing their mission ...

In the dynamics of Valentina Day, the Lycée Roland Garros celebrated World Space Week with the event sponsor for the opening ceremony Katia Vinogradova

7.  Conclusion

It was a good place to send a positive message to the world for a sustainable society.
